Laos.\u00a0 As a child (and during the horrific Vietnam War) he learned the art of basket weaving from his grandfather.\u00a0 Traditionally, while women weave the textiles, men shape the bamboo, rattan, and other baskets used in villages for carrying, holding, protecting, and storing their textiles, food, and firewood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_99\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_6230.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99\" class=\"size-full wp-image-99\" alt=\"Mr. Siovan at his home.\" src=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_6230.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_6230.jpg 400w, https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC_6230-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-99\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Siovan at his home.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the war, Mr. Siovan was able to get a government job, and he worked for 30 years for the Department of Agriculture in Houaphan Province.\u00a0 While a civil servant, Mr. Siovan earned a little extra cash selling baskets, enjoying the patient, methodical work, and soon he was being asked to teach the art of basket-weaving for the next generation.\u00a0 His reputation for both quality of weaving and teaching skills grew quickly, and he is now working full-time as a weaver and teacher.
