Rather than Maren and I visiting our wonderful Lao weaving friends in their village in Laos, we finally \u201cgot even\u201d by having them visit us on their first ever trip to America; for weavers Souk and Phout, it was their first time outside of SE Asia. For two days the jet-lagged weavers attended workshops that introduced them to American business and marketing, and then they sold some phenomenal textiles in the marketplace. Maren and I flew down to assist with the sales and cheer them on. The crowd was dense and receptive, and they did well with sales. Many attendees complemented those Lao weavers, dyers and designers as the highlight of the 150 or more represented artists.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_796\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=796\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-796\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-796\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-796\" src=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0101-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0101-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0101-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0101-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0101-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phout and Souksakone&#8217;s first visit to a Whole Foods Supermarket. So many things!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They then spent a week with us here in Eugene \u2013 and the weather was perfect. What a blast seeing our world through another\u2019s eyes. A few highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watching them take photos in the produce section of Whole Foods \u2013 what a selection of greens! The wine department was overwhelming, and just how many kinds of cheese are there?<\/li>\n<li>Getting to throw a first snowball ever, while enjoying the views at Crater Lake.<\/li>\n<li>Watching forests glide by the car window for hours. They agree that our life-style here is very <em>tomasat<\/em> \u2013 that is, based on the goodness of being natural. Nobody is eating them??<\/li>\n<li>Eating more meat in a week than they eat in a season \u2013 the T-bone with a baked potato was well-received. Better place to be!<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We laughed so much, and we are so grateful for Malaithong\u2019s translation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>On one evening late in the week, as we shared a bottle of wine, Maren mentioned how we felt like we truly had family in Lao. \u00a0How was it possible for people so far apart to find such a heart-bound friendship?<\/p>\n<p>Malaithong explained that the Lao have a specific word &#8211; <em>Seo<\/em> &#8211; to refer to a friend with who you share a deeper connection. And that yes, we were all <em>seo<\/em>, bonded by our trust and affection.<\/p>\n<p>Malaithong continued. \u00a0&#8220;Here is what I think happened. In the beginning we were of the same family, and then, when all the people were being put onto the Earth, at that moment there was a ver-ry big storm, and a great wind,&#8221; and here Malaithong waved her hands in front of her face and made a &#8220;whoo-oo-oosh&#8221; sound. &#8220;Myself, and Souk and Phout blew about and landed in Laos, and you and Josh blew about and landed in America.
