{"id":118,"date":"2012-04-16T22:13:17","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T22:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/?p=118"},"modified":"2013-09-18T22:13:59","modified_gmt":"2013-09-18T22:13:59","slug":"an-amazing-talent-now-outlets-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/?p=118","title":{"rendered":"An Amazing Talent Now Outlets in America!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>An Amazing Talent Now Outlets in America!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Houaphon Province&#8217;s small provincial capital of Xam Neua (Laos), way on the eastern edge of town where the main road ends, past the Buddhist stupa and around the corner on a small side street, sits a modest cement-block home and workshop of a most extraordinary weaver.\u00a0 [We\u2019ll refrain from naming her as we do not have her permission to do so.]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC03497.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119\" alt=\"The master dyer and designer showing one of her new shawls.\" src=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC03497-231x300.jpg\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC03497-231x300.jpg 231w, http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC03497.jpg 773w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The master dyer and designer showing one of her new shawls.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2006, on our first visit to Xam Neua (before Above the Fray), the local tourist office had casually recommended we visit her modest workshop.\u00a0 We did not have a translator but felt confident with our Lao-English dictionary and the calculator to see what she had to offer.\u00a0 She greeted us politely, indicated she knew no English, and invited into to sit down on an old couch.\u00a0 Glasses of water appeared, and then this woman brought out some textiles she had designed and made; our jaws dropped on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>A subtle modernist, she takes the traditional motifs of her Tai Daeng culture and creates her own private line of unique, exquisite silk scarves and shawls.\u00a0 Her motifs and designs are deceptively simple and elegant, and tend to avoid the more traditional complex geometric play.\u00a0 Her use of rich hues and buoyant color-play, all created using natural dyes, allow the energy of her silks to jump right off the shimmering textile and dance.\u00a0 She uses only the finest, thinnest quality of silk thread, and doesn&#8217;t fear bold, sharp images; the weaving quality is flawless.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hilltribeart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/DSC01915.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121\" alt=\"One of the traditional sets of motifs used by this designer in her shawls.
