Giant Spirits and Naga
Name: Giant Spirits and Naga

Item#: 9023

On a slate blue background, the pregnant Naga (mythological river serpents - see the spots of color in the body of the serpent representing fertility) and Phii Nak (mythological giant spirits - very fierce creatures that are particularly protective of children from wild forest spirits) intertwine to make a complex, multi-dimensional geometric pattern. The textile, made of hand-reeled, naturally dyed, handwoven silk, is a woman's shoulder cloth to wear to temple or for traditional ceremonies, and is still used today. Comes with a photo of the designer and dyer wearing the textile.

Size: 7.5 in x 75 in.

Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos
