Saang Hong and Ancestor Spirit Textile
Name: Saang Hong and Ancestor Spirit Textile

Item#: 5400

This large shaman cloth or silk ceremonial blanket is covered with columns of Saang Hong (mythological elephant-birds) pregnant with rainbows representing the hong bird (mythological bird who's belly is the rainbow) with columns of ancestor spirits in wax naga boats (boats with prow and stern of mythological river serpents and candles on the roof), representing the fall ceremony when people make boats of leaves and float them with candles in them, symbolically sending their wishes to the spirit world. The bright white primary color and pastel color accents contrast with the black ground providing a strong visual impact to the textile. The textile is handwoven from hand-reeled, locally-raised silkworms and dyed naturally. The fringe is silkworms cut to resemble flowers. Comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer modeling her textile. (Note the ever-so-slight dye-lot change visible halfway down the 4th photo of the textile hanging on the wall (about 2/3 of the total textile is showing in that photo) - the natural color shifts mid-way from a lighter natural to a slightly more ivory. Make sure you like this before purchasing. )
