Khon Buhaan Shaman Cloth
Name: Khon Buhaan Shaman Cloth

Item#: 11084

This textile is defined by its spiritually powerful motifs: a Khon Buhaan (ancestor spirit) in a wax naga boat (a "boat" formed by a naga - a mythological river serpent - with candelabra on the roof top), and Saang Hong (mythological elephant-birds) pregnant with rainbows, which reside on the belly of the mythological hong bird. In traditional Tai Daeng beliefs, the shaman would ride the wax naga boat to the ancestor world to bring back an ancestor spirit to help with the ritual being performed with the use of the mythological creatures woven within the textile. Handwoven on a hand-built loom from naturally-dyed, hand-reeled silk, this textile comes with a photo of the designer and natural dyer modeling her art.
