Welcome To Above The Fray: Traditional Hill tribe Art

We represent the finest traditional artists who live in hill tribe Laos and Vietnam. Our handwoven silks, cotton and hemp textiles, basketry, jewelry and other arts are as meaningful in these artists' lives today as they have been for generations.

While these artists come from a diversity of ethnicities - Tai Daeng, H'mong, Katu, Lao Loum, Dzao, Akha, and others - they all share a passion, talent, and reputation for creating the highest-quality textiles and other arts using traditional materials, methods and motifs.

Above the Fray's owners, Maren Beck and Joshua Hirschstein, regularly explore the hill tribe region of Laos and Vietnam to learn about, document, support, and enjoy the regional artists and their communities, and the millennia-old textile and craft traditions. They are the authors of "Silk Weavers of Hill Tribe Laos: Textiles, Tradition, and Well-Being," the 2018 gold-medal winner of the Benjamin Franklin Award (Travel).
